The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) is the diplomatic civil service under Group A. It is one of the Central Civil Services under the executive branch of the Government of India. The members of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) represent the country in international territory. This service is very different from other services; it deals with diplomacy, trade and cultural relations. One of the primary goals of the service is to frame foreign policies and management of Indian missions abroad.
A career of Indian Foreign Service Officer begins abroad as a Third Secretary and becomes a Second Secretary as soon as he is confirmed in service. The hierarchy or the ascending rank at an embassy is as follows: Third Secretary (entry level) Second Secretary (promotion upon being confirmed in service) First Secretary Counsellor Minister Deputy Chief of Mission/Deputy High Commissioner/Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador/High Commissioner/Permanent Representative The hierarchy or the ascending rank at the Ministry of External Affairs is as follows: Under Secretary Deputy Secretary Director Joint Secretary Additional Secretary Foreign Secretary of India (India's Top Diplomat, Administrative Head of the Indian Foreign Service & Foreign Service Board) Salary of an IFS officers posted abroad: GRADE POST BASIC SCALE PER MONTH Junior Under Secretary INR 8, 000 - 14, 000 Senior Under Secretary INR 10, 700 - 16, 000 Junior Administrative Deputy Secretary INR 12, 800 - 17, 000 Selection Grade Counsellor Director INR 15, 100 - 18, 500 Senior Administrative Joint Secretary INR 18, 500 - 22, 500 High Commissioner/Ambassador Foreign Secretary INR 26, 000 (Fixed amount) Salary of a Junior IFS Officer - approximately INR 60, 000 - INR 70, 000 per month, including perks and allowances.
Candidates should be between 21 to 30 years of age as on 1 August of the year of examination. Maximum 30 for general category, 33 for OBCs and 35 for SCs/STs . Educational Qualifications: Candidates are required to have degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized institute or university.
